An engineering company has been fined $250,000 after a 59-year-old man was fatally crushed in a workplace incident in northern Victoria in December 2017.

WorkSafe said workers were dismantling equipment at an old cheese factory in Leitchville when a 770 kg condenser fell on the man, crushing him to death. Another worker sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident.

The condenser was being loaded into a shipping container for transport to New Zealand.

A jury had earlier found the company guilty of failing to supervise its workers.

The company was found not guilty of three violations of workplace health and safety regulations.

WorkSafe Executive Director of Health and Safety Narelle Beer said the safety agency will take legal action against any employer who violates workplace health and safety rules.
