Boat explodes on Union Lake
A fire set off an explosion on a boat Sunday on Union Lake, prompting deployment of the sheriff's Search and Rescue Team and a crew from the Commerce Township Fire Department.
No injuries were reported.
According to the sheriff's office, multiple 911 calls came in at around 4 p.m. reporting a boat fire near the lake's sandbar.
On arrival, emergency responders found a burning boat and debris in the water. After extinguishing the flames, they removed the boat from the water using lift bags and other equipment, the sheriff's office said.
The boat's owner and passenger were located in the water and were returned safely to shore, the sheriff's office said.
The incident prompted a reminder from the sheriff's office to boaters about using the watercraft's blower motor before activating its ignition. Deputies believe the fire ignited after gas fumes weren't properly vented before the engine was started.
The emergency team reportedly accessed the lake from the boat launch next to a restaurant on Union Lake Road near Commerce Road.
The sheriff's office had no further information on the incident.
